Full Motion Racing will be exhibiting two motion simulators at the July 8th SDBMWCCA Autocross. We will be offering free rides to BMWCCA members in return for some feedback on our experience. We hope to see you at the Q for some laps in the BMW Sauber F1.06.

The Session

The session starts between T4 and T5. You have about half the track to warm up your tires and get used to the setup before entering the front straight towards Start/Finish for your first timed lap. Take it easy on this stretch. You don't want to end up with an off-track excursion and be forced to start your timed laps with dirty tires and reduced traction.

Turn 1

This long increasing radius turn can be entered in 4th gear. Once the car settles into the turn, you can slowly get back on the throttle through the turn to exit well into 5th gear.

Turn 2

Right after the overpass the tarmac forks left and right. In this configuration Turn 3 is a right 7th gear, full throttle, right hand sweeper.

Turn 3

Continuing in 7th gear, this turns takes you past the secondary pit entrance onto a straight leading to the T4/T5 switchback.

Turn 4

This turn lends itself to late braking and a late apex approach. It is the first of two 2nd gear 140 degree turns. This left/right combo creates a switchback leading onto the back straight. With cold tires this turn is often overshot. Just as easily traction can be lost getting back on the throttle coming out of the turn.

Turn 5

Another 140 degree turn, exiting onto the back straight. Getting back on the throttle out of this turn can be tricky, but is vital to maximize the following stretch. The back straight quickly opens into a series of long sweepers that can all be taken at full throttle in 7th gear.

Turn 6

This turn is a 2nd gear 180 degree turn. After exiting the turn, you should aim for the center of the track to straighten out the following bend and get set up on the right of the track for the downhill that follows.

Turn 7

Turn 7 is actually a chicane consisting of quick left, right, left turns. A lot of speed needs to be scrubbed off on the downhill before entering the turn. This last turn exits onto the front straight. It is usually navigated in 2nd, but it can be straightened out and taken in 3rd.

The Equipment

Taking you around Aston National is our motion simulator. Capable of momentary acceleration up to 2g, this motion platform realistically reproduces the forces acting on the race driver. The cockpit is suspended between 3 movable struts, allowing 3 degrees of freedom. The screen is mounted to the steering wheel so that your point of view always stays true to your motion.

The car simulated by our software is the 2006 BMW Sauber F1 chassis. Like its real world counter part, it is powered by a 2.4 litre V8 producting 770bhp and 209ftlb of torque. All this in a chassis weighing only 1169lbs.
